Dr. Bravein Amalakuhan, MD
Dr. Amalakuhan completed his Internal Medicine residency at Penn State University-Hershey/Harrisburg Medical Center, after which he completed a Cardiac Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at the John Hopkins University Hospital. Later relocating to Texas to complete a joint fellowship in Pulmonary-Critical Care Medicine, Dr. Amalakuhan now practices as a subspecialist in San Antonio, working with Texas IPS. Dr.Amalakuhan lectures at UT Health's School of Medicine, and UT Health’s Graduate School of Nursing.

Dr. Kristina Eng, MD
A native of Flint, MI, Dr. Eng graduated cum laude with a B.S. in biochemistry from the University of Notre Dame, after which she attended the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Eng completed her residency in Anesthesiology and her fellowship in Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology, at the University of Michigan Hospital System. Dr. Eng joined Tejas Anesthesia in 2012, and is a member of their San Antonio division. Additionally, Dr. Eng serves as a diplomat to the American Board of Anesthesiology and to the National Board of Echocardiography, for Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography.

Preventing Nursing Burnout
Gurule BSN, RN, CCRN
Having started her nursing career as an LPN in 1991, Veronica grew into the role of a Registered Nurse in 2012. She achieved a BSN from WGU in 2018, and is currently working towards her MSN with her alma mater. Veronica has been with the Methodist Healthcare system since 2006, where she currently works as a charge nurse in the Pediatric ICU. Veronica has received multiple awards such as the Image Maker, and currently volunteers her time to the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, at the national level.

ECMO in the awake patient
Steven Rodriguez MSN, APRN, AGACNP-BC
While cross-training as a medic during his deployments to Iraq in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Steven developed his interest in medicine and his passion for nursing. This passion later led Steven to Methodist Heart Hospital in San Antonio, where he spent four years as a Registered Nurse in SICU, while he attended UT Health Science Center at San Antonio for his BSN and MSN: Adult Gerontology Acute Care degree. Steven is board certified as an advanced nurse practitioner, working with Texas Transplant Physician Group. He also volunteers his time by serving several professional organizations, to include the American Nurses Association, American Association of Critical Care Nurses, American Association of Nurse Practitioners and American Association of Hispanic Nurses.

Whole Blood Administration
Dr. Donald H. Jenkins, MD, FACS
Dr. Jenkins completed his general surgery residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center in 1996. After completion of a trauma/critical care fellowship he went on to serve as Trauma Medical Director for the 59th Medical Wing at Lackland Air Force Base. Following 9/11, Dr. Jenkins was the principal architect of the Joint Trauma Theater Trauma System in Iraq and Afghanistan. His work dramatically improved the care of our wounded service men and women. He retired from military service in 2008 and accepted the position of Trauma Medical Director for the Mayo Clinic. Before his return to San Antonio he transformed the Minnesota Trauma System into one of the best trauma care systems in the world. Dr. Jenkins has received numerous awards through out his career, to include receipt of the Distinguished Service Metal. Over the past decade, he has participated in research related to resuscitation of trauma patients, specifically transfusion and transfusion ratios, now to include transfusion in the per-hospital area. He has given many national and regional presentations in his field of study. He has published 86 peer reviewed publications, and published 15 book chapters. He is currently a Professor of Surgery at UTHSC, and a trauma surgeon at University Hospital.

Dr. Gerard Gawrys, PharmD, BCPS, BCIDP
After graduating from the St. Louis College of Pharmacy, Dr. Gawrys completed a PGY1 pharmacy practice residency at the VA Hudson Valley HealthCare System in Castle Point, NY, then a PGY2 residency in infectious diseases at the Milwaukee VA Medical Center. Since August 2013, Dr.
Gawrys has served as an infectious disease clinical pharmacy specialist, coordinating antimicrobial stewardship efforts within the Methodist System: San Antonio, and serving as the director to the PGY1 pharmacy residency program at Methodist Hospital and Methodist Children’s Hospital. -
